What is sciatica?
The longest and thickest nerve in the body, the sciatic or medical terminology nervus ischiadicus, emerges from the last vertebra of the lower back and ends just below the knee. In other words, the sciatic nerve, which is formed by the union of the L4, L5, S1, S2 and S3 nerve roots in the lower region of the waist, passes through the perforated area in the pelvis, which is located in the hip and defined as the coxa, and extends to the back of the leg. It divides into branches in the knee joint and reaches up to the foot, forming motor and sensory functions in this region. Sciatica is actually the name given to pain caused by nerve compression. The often wondered question “What does sciatica mean?” The answer to the question can be given in this way. Compression or stretching of the roots of the sciatic nerve in the lumbar region causes a feeling of pain in the leg. In some cases, causes such as slipped vertebrae, inflammation, tumor and the presence of cysts can also cause sciatic nerve pain. Sciatica pain, which starts with low back pain radiating to the hip, spreads along the nerve from the groin to the back of the leg and from there to the foot. In severe cases of sciatica, the leg becomes weak and knee and wrist reflexes are reduced. The higher the person raises their leg, the more severe the pain.

How to avoid sciatica?
It may be recommended to keep the back and waist muscles strong in order to prevent sciatica, which greatly reduces the quality of life of the person. A good posture is effective in preventing sciatica. In addition, it is among the measures to be taken to avoid sitting incorrectly, to support the back, waist and arms while sitting, and to prevent sciatica. Avoiding standing for long periods of time, staying still, and lifting heavy can also prevent sciatica.
